| Virgin HD
Virgin's HD television service is a part of Virgin Media Inc. This is the rebranded company which was formerly ntl:Telewest, and before that NTL and Telewest. Virgin Media is a cable network which offer broadband and television services. Virgin charge users to access their television service, which is the second most subscribed pay television service in the UK (Sky being the most). Virgin has in the region of three and half million subscribers. The one drawback with Virgin's television network, is that a customer has to be within their fibre optic cable area. If they are not, then Virgin cannot provide their service. This excludes a large proportion of rural England, Scotland, Wales and NI. Whereas Sky's satellite service can be accessed from nearly every UK home. Virgin TV has access to the majority of television channels you can find on Sky's satellite service. Therefore, the majority of the BBC's, ITV's and Sky's HD content can be accessed through Virgin's V HD Box or V+ HD Box (the device needed to access Virgin TV). As of 2010, Virgin's cheapest access package is £3.25 a month*, which is a introductory rate for new customer for 6 months, which then converts to £6.50 a month thereafter. This package provides access to 65 television channels. However, to access HD content includes a one-off £49 activation fee. |
