VESA stands for "Video Electronics Standards Association" and is a international body which initiates standards for video and computing equipment. Their wall mount standard is one of many popular standards created by this organisation. VESA have defined their mount standard as the "Flat Display Mounting Interface" (FDMI). It has also been referred to as the "Mounting Interface Standard" (MIS). FDMI was first introduced around about 1997, and covers any flat panel screen, therefore includes home computing monitors, plasma and LCD TVs, and other flat panel displays.

There are now numerous VESA standard variants such as,

  • VESA 75 - 75 x 75 mm mounting screw pattern
  • VESA 100 - 100 x 100 mm mounting screw pattern
  • VESA 200 - 100 x 200 mm mounting screw pattern

The additional screw patterns were required because of the introduction of larger TV screens.
