BBC HD

logo of the british broadcasting corporation

As of 2010, the BBC is slowly airing the majority of their programming in high definition. They have recently launched a HD channel, called 'BBC One HD'. Which, as the name suggests, provides the majority of programmes aired on BBC1 in HD. The BBC currently have two HD channels.

  • 1. BBC One HD
    • Provides TrueHD and upscaled programmes, follows the schedule of the traditional BBC1 channel.
  • 2. BBC HD
    • Only shows TrueHD programming, from a selection of BBC channels.

High definition cannot be provided through an analogue aerial, therefore you will need access to either Freeview, Sky or Virgin Media. The channel number for BBC1 HD on these access media are as follows.

  • Freeview - Channel Fifty
  • BSkyB - Channel One Hundred and Forty Three
  • Virgin - Channel One Hundred and Eight

Not all of the BBC's programming will be broadcast in HD. For example, you will need to wait till Christmas Day, 2010, to watch EastEnders in HD. And, even when EastEnders is launched in HD, it wont be strictly TrueHD, but upscaled. The BBC only expect that all of it's programming will be in TrueHD by 2012.

Some of the programmes available on BBCHD are as follows.

  • The Apprentice
  • Mad Men
  • Last of the Summer Wine
  • The Hairy Bikers'
  • Flog It
  • The Trip
  • Holby City
